Aurora Viewing Dome Opens at Sweden’s Icehotel

Visiting Sweden in winter, the highlight is undoubtedly witnessing the breathtaking aurora borealis, but staying in an ice igloo under the shimmering lights would be an even more unforgettable experience. The Icehotel in Swedish Lapland has been built annually as a limited-time winter attraction since 1990, using locally harvested river ice. Designers craft one-of-a-kind accommodation spaces, which melt away when temperatures rise. This unique lodging concept has become a renowned winter destination over the past 20+ years, attracting over 50,000 visitors each year for stays or tours.

Now in its 26th year, the Icehotel is constructed each season using pristine ice harvested from the nearby Torne River, typically opening in December and operating until around March. To offer guests distinctive experiences, the hotel is redesigned annually as an art exhibition, featuring unique ice rooms. This year, beyond its signature undulating wave-shaped roof design, the Icehotel plans to unveil a year-round solar-powered annex. This addition will include 20 suites, a bar, and a gallery, allowing travelers worldwide to visit any season—including summer hiking opportunities.
