Beijing Film Academy
The predecessor of the Beijing Film Academy was the Performance Art Research Institute of the Central Film Bureau, established in 1950. In 1951, it was renamed the Film School of the Central Bureau of Cultural Affairs, then in 1953 became the Beijing Film School, and was restructured into the Beijing Film Academy in 1956.
School Scale
The Beijing Film Academy covers an area of 105 acres. It has nearly 3,000 full-time enrolled degree-seeking students, and around 3,000 adult education undergraduates, international students, in-service postgraduates, postgraduate course students, as well as trainees and continuing education students. The school is currently constructing a new campus spanning 667 acres, with plans to accommodate 6,000 full-time students.
Educational Features
Through generations of dedicated efforts, the academy has established a complete and scientific discipline system for film studies. It has formed a multi-level, multi-form talent cultivation system for the film profession, with undergraduate education as the core, covering associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, doctoral degrees, as well as continuing education and international student programs. With its scientifically oriented educational philosophy, integrated academic structure, systematic education system, elite-oriented talent cultivation, unified institutional functions, standardized practical teaching, and modernized teaching support, the Beijing Film Academy holds a leading position in China’s higher education for film. After over 60 years of development, it has built a university culture system centered on the school motto “Respect Teachers and Value Tradition, Pass on the Torch,” the school spirit “Cultivate Virtue, Study Diligently, Excel in Artistry, Practice Earnestly,” and the school ethos “Establish Morality, Voice, and Action; Pursue Truth, Beauty, and Innovation.” Based on this foundation, the academy is committed to developing film education that meets the needs of building China into a strong film nation, and to cultivating outstanding filmmakers who are respectful, courageous, and innovative. In June 2007, the academy passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation with an “excellent” rating. In the 2011 and 2012 rankings of the world’s top 25 film schools by The Hollywood Reporter, the academy ranked third globally for two consecutive years.
