As one of the three origins of Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University traces its history back to 1896. Its predecessor was the Beijing Railway Management School, established by the Qing government, which was China’s first higher education institution dedicated to training management professionals and the birthplace of modern railway management and telecommunications education in China. In 1917, it was reorganized into the Beijing Railway Management School and the Beijing Postal School. In 1921, it merged with the Shanghai Industrial School and the Tangshan Industrial School to form Jiaotong University. After the reorganization of Jiaotong University in 1923, its Beijing campus was renamed Beijing Jiaotong University. In 1950, the university was officially named Northern Jiaotong University, with the school name inscribed by Chairman Mao Zedong and the renowned bridge expert Mao Yisheng serving as president. In 1952, Northern Jiaotong University was dissolved, with the Beijing and Tangshan campuses becoming independent institutions, and the school was renamed Beijing Railway Institute. In 1970, the name “Northern Jiaotong University” was restored. In 2000, it merged with Beijing Electrical and Power College and came under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, having been transferred from the former Ministry of Railways. In 2003, the name “Beijing Jiaotong University” was reinstated. The university has produced a large number of distinguished talents renowned both in China and abroad, including Liu Han, the founder of China’s first wireless radio station; Ying Shangcai, designer of China’s first high-horsepower steam engine; Jin Shixuan, author of China’s first monograph on railway transportation; Xu Jing, pioneer of the economics of railway transportation in China; Yang Rumei, one of China’s earliest certified public accountants; and Zheng Zhenduo, a renowned modern Chinese writer, literary critic, and historian. Xiang Zhijun, who served as the chief prosecutor at the Tokyo Trials, and Ma Yinchu, a famous Chinese economist and demographer, also taught at the university. In 2016, the university celebrated its 120th anniversary. Vice Premier Liu Yandong, Vice Chairperson Yan Junqi, and leading officials such as Guo Jinlong, Wang Anshun, Chen Baosheng, –, and Yang Chuantang extended their congratulations in various forms.
