China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall is a science education base.

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall is located on the first floor of the Meteorological Science and Technology Building of the China Meteorological Administration. The exhibition hall fully embodies the development philosophy of "public meteorology, safety meteorology, and resource meteorology." Building upon a review of history and the promotion of the long-standing meteorological culture, and closely following the pulse of global scientific and technological development, it presents, through four sections—development history, glorious achievements, application fields, and future prospects—the accomplishments of China's meteorological endeavors in modernization since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, especially since the reform and opening up. It highlights the vital role of meteorological science and technology in the sustainable economic and social development, displays the service areas, capabilities, standards, and products of meteorological work, showcases the development philosophy and future vision of China’s meteorological sector, and reflects the scientific spirit and dedication of meteorological professionals.

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall emphasizes the organic integration of meteorology, art, and high-tech display formats. Utilizing forms such as reliefs, models, exhibition boards, projection systems, touchscreen systems, and 3D cinemas, it fully demonstrates the past, present, and future of meteorological science and technology development.

Openness, mobility, competition, and collaboration

——Scientific and technological system reform injects new vitality

The China Meteorological Administration is among the first national departments to initiate reforms of public research institutes. After several years of effort, the meteorological research institutes under the Administration successfully completed reforms in structural adjustment, staff reorganization, mechanism transformation, and institutional innovation. Scientific innovation capacity has significantly improved, achieving notable phased results. In October 2004, it became the first among national ministries to pass a joint evaluation organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, and the Central Organization and Staffing Office. Today, a new operational mechanism and management system characterized by "openness, mobility, competition, and collaboration" have gradually taken shape.

Currently, in the new round of operational and technological system reform under the China Meteorological Administration, a meteorological science and technology innovation system is being constructed primarily around the “one institute and eight centers” of national-level meteorological research institutions, national-level operational units, national key laboratories, departmental key open laboratories, and provincial-level scientific research institutes and related operational units. These institutions cover nearly all areas of meteorological research and technological development in terms of discipline settings and development directions, serving as important bases and platforms for meteorological science and technology innovation.

——Foundation platform construction builds a grand stage

Comprehensive Meteorological Observation System

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall: Comprehensive Meteorological Observation System

During the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, China initially established a comprehensive three-dimensional meteorological observation system integrating ground-based, air-based, and space-based platforms. By the end of 2005, the meteorological department had built 2,002 automatic weather stations out of 2,404 national-level surface observation stations, along with 5,512 small- and medium-scale densified automatic weather (rainfall) stations. There were 158 lightning monitoring stations, 6 wind profilers, and 81 GPS/MET stations either self-built or jointly developed. Among the 120 sounding stations operated by the meteorological department, 80 were equipped with L-band radar-electronic sounding systems. By the end of 2005, 101 new-generation weather radars had been installed.

The China Meteorological Administration led 12 ministries in initially completing the overall implementation plan for China’s Climate Observation System (CCOS).

Currently, Fengyun-1D and Fengyun-2C satellites are in operational orbit. The World Meteorological Organization has included the Fengyun-1 and Fengyun-2 meteorological satellites in the series of globally operational meteorological satellites. China has become one of the few countries in the world with both polar-orbiting and geostationary operational meteorological satellite series.

The National Space Weather Monitoring and Warning Center provides space weather monitoring and warning services for spaceflight fault prevention, communications, navigation, the safety of ground facilities, and human life.

Meteorological Information Communication

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall: Meteorological Information Communication

During the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, the National Meteorological Information Center was established. Represented by the meteorological communication network and high-performance computers, China’s comprehensive meteorological information network (including a modernized information network combining public and dedicated communication networks, wired and wireless) saw its integrated communication transmission capability increase by more than 60 times compared to the Ninth Five-Year Plan period; the computing power for meteorological operations and research increased nearly 200 times.

Atmospheric Composition Observation

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall: Atmospheric Composition Observation

During the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, the China Meteorological Administration established the Atmospheric Composition Observation and Service Center, upgraded four atmospheric background stations (including the Waliguan station), and initially built a national atmospheric composition observation network consisting of 30 atmospheric composition observation stations. A national acid rain observation network comprising 156 acid rain observation stations was also established, along with a sandstorm monitoring network of 24 sandstorm monitoring stations. Ecological and agricultural meteorological observations were strengthened.

Participation in the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Platform Construction

The China Meteorological Science and Technology Exhibition Hall: Participation in the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Platform Construction

The China Meteorological Administration was the first to successfully implement the pilot construction of meteorological scientific data sharing and the sharing of national EOS-MODIS satellite resources. This greatly advanced China’s data-sharing efforts, maximized the benefits of national investments, and had a positive societal impact. The ongoing implementation of Beijing high-performance computer resource sharing will provide additional resources for the construction of the national science and technology infrastructure platform. Research on key technologies in the lightning protection standard system will lay an important foundation for strengthening standardization and improving the level of lightning protection science and technology. The Waliguan Atmospheric Background Observatory and the China Remote Sensing Satellite Radiation Calibration Field have been included in the national field scientific observation and research station system, while the Lin’an, Longfengshan, and Shangdianzi atmospheric background observation stations have entered the national field scientific observation and research station sequence.
