Mount Foding
A national nature reserve and the Roof of Liaoning – Mount Foding
Mount Foding is a national nature reserve in China where the natural ecosystem remains relatively intact, covering an area of over 100,000 mu. Numerous rare animals and plants are under national protection. The world’s rare ancient fossil plants such as yew, dove tree magnolia, and Diplandrorchis sinica all originate from this region. The mountain is imposing and majestic, with vast seas of clouds. Its main peak rises 1,367 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in Liaoning, hence the name “Roof of Liaoning.”
The majestic Mount Foding (also known as Old Baldy Peak) is located in the western part of Huanren County, standing at an elevation of 1,367 meters, and is known as the “Roof of Liaoning.” The summit features an area of over a thousand square meters that is barren of vegetation, which is why it is called Mount Foding.
Mount Foding is tall and imposing, majestic and spectacular. From the summit, one can gaze southeastward to faintly see peaks such as Bamianwei, Wunv Mountain, Daqingdingzi, and Huabozi Mountain. In summer and autumn, when looking down from the peak, the sea of clouds churns dynamically, presenting a breathtaking scene. Especially at sunrise, with the sun rising above the white clouds, floating wisps of red in the sky, the view is extraordinarily enchanting, displaying a marvelous sight on Earth.
Mount Foding is now a national nature reserve, covering an area of over 100,000 mu. It attracts many researchers and tourists each year for study and sightseeing.
The Mount Foding Nature Reserve protects large areas of pristine forest and is a treasure trove of flora, fauna, and microbial species resources. According to surveys, there are more than 300 kinds of valuable medicinal plants including ginseng, codonopsis, fritillaria, gastrodia, akebia, asarum, and Northeastern thorny ginseng. There is also an abundance of edible plants such as bracken, wild vegetables, wood ear mushrooms, monkey head mushrooms, elm yellow mushrooms, and yuan mushrooms. The reserve is home to about 40 species of wild animals, over 200 species of birds, and more than 10 species of fish. World-famous fur-bearing animals and animal-derived medicinal materials include sika deer, leopard, Northeast bear, river deer, otter, weasel, and frogspawn.
The Mount Foding Nature Reserve not only boasts a wide variety of animal and plant species but has also maintained an intact primeval forest ecosystem, making it an excellent base for scientific research. From the foothills to the mountaintop, it can be divided into four distinct natural landscape zones: the broadleaf forest zone, mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest zone, Erman’s birch forest zone, and alpine tundra zone. It is also home to the world’s rare ancient fossil plant – yew (Northeast yew), which survived the catastrophe of the Quaternary Ice Age, as well as the internationally renowned dove tree magnolia. The rare Diplandrorchis sinica, which intrigued botanists and paleontologists worldwide in the 1960s, was also discovered here.
Mount Foding is a national nature reserve where the natural ecosystem is relatively well preserved.
