Haicheng Golden Tower

The Haicheng Golden Tower is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Golden Tower is located on the hillside northwest of Yangjiaoyu Village, Ximu Town, Haicheng. It is a Liao Dynasty structure, standing approximately 31.5 meters tall, and is an octagonal, thirteen-story solid brick pagoda with dense eaves. Legend has it that when sunlight shines obliquely on the tower in the morning and evening, its body glows gloriously golden—hence the name "Golden Tower." The tower’s sculptural techniques and relief figures reflect the early characteristics of the Khitan people during the Liao Dynasty. The musical and dancing figures carved in brick on the tower, some playing the zither, others the flute, are vividly depicted and exquisitely shaped. The Golden Tower was originally accompanied by the Golden Tower Temple, which was built in the first year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1573), with the tower serving as an affiliated structure of the temple. The Golden Tower is an important historical and cultural relic from the Liao Dynasty in our city, and among the existing Liao pagodas in the province, it stands out as one of the more prominent brick structures in terms of sculptural artistry, period style, architectural technology, and scale. It is also one of the more significant Liao pagodas in the entire province. The tower features a grand architectural scale, majestic presence, and exquisite carving craftsmanship, providing extremely valuable physical material for the study of the history of the Liao Dynasty in the Anshan area, as well as the politics, economy, art, and architecture of the Khitan people.

In May 2013, the Haicheng Golden Tower was designated as part of the seventh group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
