Site of Heiyang Temple Mountain

The Site of Heiyang Temple Mountain is a cultural relic protection unit of Liaoning Province.

The Site of Heiyang Temple Mountain is located on the western slope of Chaoyang Mountain, about two li west of Zhengtun Village, Tuanshan Subdistrict Office, Gaizhou City. It is a relatively flat area. In 2003, some Ming and Qing dynasty buildings were restored.

The mountain where the site is located has the Daqing River estuary to its north and the shimmering waters of Liaodong Bay to its west. This mountain is abundant in historical remains, including Shang and Zhou relics, Han dynasty tomb sites, Goguryeo mountain fortresses, temples and beacon towers from the Ming to Qing dynasties, among other traces of human activity. The site covers an area of 7,000 square meters, with a cultural layer thickness ranging from 0.4 to 0.6 meters. Artifacts found include shells, red-brown pottery shards, brown pottery shards, and stone tools, most of the pottery shards being undecorated.

The Gaizhou County Annals record: “Banshan Mountain is located twenty li southwest of the city, northwest of Zhuanshanzi, also known as Chaoyang Temple. Halfway up the mountain there is a temple called Heiyang Temple.” The Shengjing Tongzhi states, “During the TianShun era of the Ming dynasty, a Taoist priest surnamed Huang lived here. Several years later, it is popularly said that he ascended to immortality riding a crane.”

In 1984, the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government designated the Site of Heiyang Temple Mountain as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit. In 2014, the People’s Government of Liaoning Province (Liaozheng Fa [2014] No. 27) announced it as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit. The cultural relic protection scope and construction control zone announced by the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government (Yingzheng Fa [1990] No. 38) are as follows: the area within 10 meters around the Shang and Zhou relics is the protected zone, the area within 10 meters around the Han tomb site is the protected zone, and the area within 20 meters around the Goguryeo mountain fortress is the protected zone; an additional 30 meters beyond these is classified as a Class V construction control zone. The area within 30 meters around the Ming to Qing temple ruins and beacon towers is the protected zone; an additional 30 meters beyond this is classified as a Class V construction control zone.
