South Gate Ming-Qing Street

South Gate Ming-Qing Street is a cultural heritage site protected at the level of Yingkou City.

South Gate Ming-Qing Street is located in Qianjin Community, Gulou Subdistrict Office, Gaizhou City, and is an outstanding collection of modern-era architecture in Gaizhou.

South Gate Ming-Qing Street is situated south of Gaizhou’s Bell and Drum Tower, stretching along both sides of the approximately 265-meter-long Chenzhou Road. The east side has 17 ancient buildings, and the west side has 8, with a total of 9 two-story Jiangnan-style buildings covering an area of about 4,800 square meters. The structures feature large wooden frames with brick and stone construction, stone or wooden overhanging eaves, and green-tiled roofs. Historical records indicate that in the past, Gaizhou was the first port city in Northeast China. River boats could navigate the Daqing River all the way to the area outside South Gate of Gaizhou. Merchants from southern China gathered here, shops lined the streets, guildhalls were built, and the city became the most prosperous in Liaodong. South Gate Ming-Qing Street was one of the busiest streets of that time.

In 2004, the Gaizhou Municipal People’s Government (Gaizhou Government Document [2004] No. 15) designated South Gate Ming-Qing Street as a municipal (county-level) cultural heritage protection unit. In 2012, the Yingkou Municipal People’s Government (Yingkou Government Document [2012] No. 173) listed it as a city-level cultural heritage protection unit. The Yingkou Municipal People’s Government (Yingkou Government Document [2013] No. 185) defined the protected area and construction control zone as follows: with the centerline of South Gate Ming-Qing Street as the baseline, the protected area extends north to the base of the southern wall of the Bell and Drum Tower, south to Nanmadao Hutong, and 20 meters on both the eastern and western sides; the Class II construction control zone extends 50 meters outward to the north, east, and west beyond the protected area, and up to the inner edge of the moat to the south.
