Former Residence of the Zhang Family

The Former Residence of the Zhang Family was the ancestral home of Zhang Xueliang. It is located about one kilometer north of Yejia Village in Dongfeng Town. During the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, Zhang Xueliang’s great-great-grandfather, Zhang Yonggui, chose this site when he migrated from Hebei to Dongfeng Town. The residence is divided into eastern and western sections, about one meter apart, each with five main rooms. When Zhang Zuolin became the Viceroy of the Three Eastern Provinces, Commander-in-Chief of the An–Feng Railway, and Grand Marshal of the Army and Navy, he invested heavily in expanding the residence. At its peak, it consisted of two quadrangle courtyards with numerous horses and carriages, exuding great prestige. After the September 18th Incident, the residence was demolished by the Japanese army and is now a ruin. The site of the former residence is currently a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.

In May 2013, the Former Residence of the Zhang Family was listed as part of the seventh group of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

Zhang Xueliang (June 3, 1901 – October 14, 2001), courtesy name Hanqing, art name Yian, and childhood names Shuangxi and Xiaoliuzi, was a first-class general of the Army, of Han ethnicity, with ancestral roots in Haicheng, Liaoning. He was born on June 3, 1901 (the 17th day of the 4th lunar month), in Zhangjiabao Village (formerly known as Sangzilin Zhanjiawopu), Jiujian Township, Tai’an County, Liaoning Province (now part of Zhangjiabao Village, Jiujian Township, Tai’an County). Known as the “Young Marshal,” he was the eldest son of Zhang Zuolin, leader of the Fengtian Clique warlords, and one of the “Four Handsome Men of the Republic of China.”

Zhang Zuolin (1875–1928), courtesy name Yuting, was from Xiaowaotun Village, Majia Village, Jiazhangsi Township (now Dongfeng Town, Panshan District, Panjin City, Liaoning Province), Haicheng County, Fengtian Province. He served as the Grand Marshal of the Army and Navy of the Republic of China and was known as “Marshal Zhang.” He was the father of Zhang Xueliang.

Born on March 19, 1875 (the first year of the Guangxu reign in the Qing Dynasty). In his youth, he attended a private school and studied under Yang Jingzhen.

In the 20th year of the Guangxu reign (1894), during the First Sino-Japanese War, he enlisted in the Song Qing Yi Army in Yingkou and served as a guard for Song Qing.
