On the 40th anniversary of the inscription by Mao Zedong and other veteran proletarian revolutionaries in honor of Comrade Lei Feng, Gongchangling District held the opening ceremony of the Lei Feng Memorial Hall and the launch ceremony of the campaign to promote the Lei Feng spirit and build a renowned tourism district.

In May 1959, the Gongchangling Iron Mine decided to build a coking plant. The Anshan Iron and Steel Company provided strong support for the construction. On August 20, Lei Feng and a group of young workers came from the Anshan Iron and Steel General Plant to the coking plant to participate in production and construction. In late November 1959, the Liaoyang Military Service Bureau began winter conscription. On the afternoon of December 3, Lei Feng solemnly submitted an application to join the army titled “My Determination to Answer the Call.” On January 8, 1960, Lei Feng put on his military uniform and joined the army with honor. Because Lei Feng set off for the army from here, the tourism-oriented Gongchangling District has heavily promoted the “Lei Feng” brand, highlighting this glorious starting point of his journey to the military.

The Lei Feng Memorial Hall houses a statue of Lei Feng, inscriptions from national leaders dedicated to him, as well as over 60 precious photos and more than 30 artifacts. Through historical images and relics, it vividly recreates some lesser-known stories of Lei Feng’s work and life in Gongchangling, Liaoyang.

The Lei Feng Memorial Hall in Gongchangling District has been officially designated as a patriotic education base by Liaoyang City and has also become another tourist attraction in the city.

Born in December 18, 1940, in Wangyue Township, Changsha County (now Wangcheng District), Hunan Province (original name: Lei Zhengxing), he came from a poor farming family. He was a child raised in hardship. His grandfather, father, mother, elder brother, and younger brother all died due to cruel treatment, leaving him orphaned before the age of seven.
