Can babies born on a plane get free flights for life? China Airlines responds

On the 7th, a China Airlines flight from Taipei to Los Angeles experienced an incident about six hours after takeoff when a pregnant passenger, traveling alone and under 32 weeks gestation, had her water break. The cabin crew immediately made an announcement requesting medical assistance from any doctors on board. Considering the safety of the mother and baby, the decision was made to divert to Anchorage Airport in Alaska, where both were taken to a local hospital. Both mother and daughter are safe.
About half an hour before the plane landed in Anchorage, with the help of professionals and cabin crew, the pregnant woman—under 32 weeks—successfully gave birth to a baby girl. The plane landed at 5:06 p.m. local time (approximately 9:06 a.m. on the 8th, Taipei time) and the mother and baby were taken to the hospital for observation. After refueling, the flight resumed and although it arrived in Los Angeles about three hours late, most passengers were understanding.
According to China Airlines’ policy, pregnant women under 32 weeks are treated as regular passengers. This passenger informed ground staff of her pregnancy during check-in. After being asked about her week of pregnancy and physical condition, and confirming she met the requirements for flying, she was allowed to board. Pregnant travelers are advised to consult a doctor before flying to ensure their own health and that of the fetus.
As for the rumor that babies born on a flight can enjoy free flights for life, China Airlines clarified that this is not true. Regarding nationality, the baby girl was born on a Republic of China aircraft in U.S. airspace, and it will depend on how Anchorage Hospital classifies the situation.
