Increase in inbound travelers to Japan   Chubu Centrair International Airport’s LCC terminal planned for 2017 launch

Low-cost carrier (LCC) travel is becoming increasingly popular across Asia. As more budget airlines launch routes to Japan, airports around the country are also planning to build dedicated terminals for low-cost carriers. In addition to Tokyo Narita Airport’s already operational Terminal 3 and Kansai Airport’s currently under-construction Terminal 3, “Chubu Centrair International Airport,” which serves Japan’s central region, has announced plans to open a dedicated second terminal for low-cost carriers between 2017 and 2018.

Due to the depreciation of the Japanese yen, there has been an increasing number of travelers from Taiwan and China visiting Japan. Coupled with the continuous expansion of low-cost carriers, Taiwan’s LCC “TransAsia Airways” (V Air) is expected to launch flights to Nagoya by the end of the year, which is cited as a key reason why Chubu Centrair International Airport believes a new terminal is necessary.

According to Chubu Centrair International Airport’s plans, the dedicated LCC terminal will be built south of the currently operational terminal, with an estimated annual capacity of 3 to 5 million passengers.
