Cai Weide and Wu Shuxian create a youthful Pinglin getaway with "Golden Melon No. 3"

 Elderly folks living next to Pinglin didn’t quite understand what these two 28-year-olds were doing when they moved to the countryside. “How’s that going? Are you getting enough to eat?” their neighbor often greeted them this way, even worrying they might not have enough food and occasionally bringing over vegetables he grew himself.

Four years ago, they unexpectedly got the chance to rent an old house from a teacher, which forged an inseparable bond between Cai Weide and Pinglin. Two years ago, he and Wu Shuxian established the “Golden Melon No. 3” studio, using local cuisine and creative travel experiences to show visitors a youthful side of Pinglin.

Cai Weide laughed and said, “Actually, we’ve been out of school for a long time. Back then, by chance, we followed our professor on a field study and got in touch with the world of cultural creativity and local culture. Before the project ended, the teacher rented out this old house and let us do whatever we wanted with it. We weren’t really ready at first, but we just started anyway. At the beginning, I gathered some friends to help clean up the space, and that’s how I met my current girlfriend, Wu Shuxian (Shanshan).”
