Grow through fun playtime！Taiwan’s first marine science learning center opens on the 29th

Taiwan’s first“Marine Science Learning Center”officially opened at the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology on the 29th. In conjunction with the 2015 National Marine Education Conference, the “Marine Science Learning Center” also showcased 11 teaching modules—including underwater gliders, how big is the home of the magical sea snail, the secret of the message in a bottle, fish identification, measurement essentials, and the coral battle—from October 29 to 30. These featured DIY classes, lab-based sessions, tabletop games, and treasure-hunt puzzles.

These teaching modules are designed based on the concept of “the relationship between humans and the ocean,” incorporating local environmental resources, the museum’s diverse exhibition halls, rich collection of materials, and expertise from various marine scientists as educational assets. They also integrate content from school subjects such as biology, physics, chemistry, earth science, language arts, social studies, and history, and have been developed around five key themes: “marine technology, marine life, marine science, marine environment, and marine culture.”

Dr. Yeh Chia-Cheng of the Marine Science Learning Center explained that experiences with marine-themed teaching modules are available in two formats: “on-site visits” and “school outreach programs.” The “on-site visit” option allows visitors to register for desired modules two weeks in advance every Wednesday and Friday. The “school outreach” program requires teachers to first complete a professional development workshop on the modules before applying to the museum to bring them to schools for a wider student audience.
