Top 10 Classic Bicycle Routes Announced: Sun Moon Lake and Taipei Riverside Bike Path Make the List

Cycling is booming in popularity. The results of the 10 Great Classic Bicycle Routes selection event, organized by the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education, have been announced today after on-site route evaluations by experts and scoring by the selection committee. Among themthe “Sun Moon Lake Bicycle Path System” was selected as one of the Top 10 Classic Bicycle Routes and also won the People's Choice Award.

Online voting accounted for 60% of the total score, while the selection committee’s scores made up the remaining 40%. The evaluation criteria were based on the concept of “HAPPY,” which includes “Healthy,” “Accessibility,” “Participation,” “Popularity,” and “Youthfulness.” As the scores among the routes were very close, the committee further discussed and selected six additional honorable mention routes, as well as awarded three special prizes.

Sun Moon Lake Bicycle Path System
It secured the People's Choice Award due to its top ranking in online voting. It has also been recognized by CNN as one of the world’s top ten cycling routes, and offers distinctive scenery at any time of day, earning it a spot among the Top 10 Classic Bicycle Routes.

Taipei Riverside Bicycle Path
It met world-class standards in overall service quality and features a well-functioning bicycle rental system, earning its place on the Top 10 Classic Bicycle Routes list and winning the “Barrier-Free” Special Award.

Tainan Houpi Baihe Milan Lotus Line
It was awarded the “Four-Season Scenery” Special Award for its rich and varied landscapes throughout the year.

Chiayi Puzi River Bicycle Path
It has significant development potential due to its integration of sugar refinery culture, historic architecture, leisure agriculture, ecological communities, and a well-planned bicycle path network.

The Sports Administration stated that both public participation and the promotion of cycling and tourism have shown positive progress, which aligns with the purpose of organizing this event. They hope to continue this momentum to attract more domestic and international tourists to experience Taiwan’s beauty and bicycle-friendly environment, and to establish Taiwan as a true “island of bicycles,” making an impact locally and globally.
