Controversial: San Diego's SeaWorld to End Orca Shows in 2017

Would you want to see animal shows featuring creatures taken from the ocean and kept in captivity?
According to a report by Lonely Planet, the famous San Diego SeaWorld announced it would no longer present orca shows in 2017. SeaWorld is home to the world’s largest captive population of orcas (also known as killer whales), with 11 at its San Diego location.

In the past, numerous animal rights groups strongly opposed the way SeaWorld treated orcas. After the 2013 documentary "Blackfish" was released, SeaWorld’s reputation plummeted and its business suffered a sharp decline. The film tells the story of an orca trainer who was killed in an attack and further highlights the long-standing issue of the unethical captivity of animals.
As for the future direction, officials stated that the focus will shift from entertainment to education. Instead of using orcas for performances, they will be provided with larger pools for swimming in the years to come.
