Singapore Airlines crafts a 1,000-hour miniature paper A380 model — even the seatbacks move like the real thing

To showcase the craftsmanship behind Singapore Airlines’ inflight products, the airline partnered with well-known paper craft artist Luca Iaconi-Stewart to create a paper model of the A380. The 1:20 scale seat model used more than 3,000 parts and took nearly 1,000 hours to finish. Once the making process video was uploaded to YouTube, it garnered almost 60,000 views within a day, with many commenting: “How amazing!”

Luca Iaconi-Stewart designed and crafted the model seats based on the engineering blueprints of the Singapore Airlines A380 and its cabin products. The models of economy class, premium economy, business class, first class, and the A380 suite gradually took shape under the artist’s skilled hands. To stay true to the originals, even elements like footrests, cabin doors, and seat recline angles were made operable through finely detailed parts. Features such as lie-flat beds, reading lights, armrests, and tray tables are all included, creating an immersive experience that feels like stepping into a miniature world.

Singapore Airlines stated that 100 Manila folders were used to precisely cut out more than 3,000 components, which were then carefully assembled. The entire model took nearly 1,000 hours to complete and used up 50 razor blades. Among them, the A380 suite was the most complex to build, taking about a month and using over 400 components. The business class seats were the most intricate, consisting of several small linkage systems, the smallest of which were only 0.5 cm long. The connecting pins used were just 0.254 cm long and 0.1 cm in diameter. Singapore Airlines also noted that they hope the video will allow passengers to appreciate the exceptional attention to detail.
