The “2015 Happy Bear Urban Carnival” is making its grand return, set to launch in grand style at Taichung Park. Blending the views of Sun Moon Lake and the historic Lake Heart Pavilion — a municipal heritage site — with the old streets of downtown Central Taichung, 100 teddy bears will pop up all over Taichung from Taichung Railway Station to Taichung Park. As of today (11th), 76 teddy bears have already appeared in Taichung Park. ETtoday EBC News Cloud was on-site in Taichung for an exclusive preview, offering travelers a sneak peek.

Starting tomorrow (12th), 76 teddy bears of various designs will appear throughout Taichung Park. After December 21st, 12 hidden edition teddy bears will make their debut in the park. Additionally, along the streets from Taichung Railway Station to Taichung Park, 12 “Zodiac Bears” will be displayed, allowing visitors to rediscover different corners of Taichung through this army of bears.

In terms of design, besides maintaining the approximately 170 cm life-sized scale of the past two years, this year the bears will appear in seated poses. The Taiwan Teddy Bear Association explained that there are actually hearts on the palms and soles of the teddy bears, but in the past two years they were displayed standing up, preventing these details from being seen. This year, by using seated poses, more design possibilities can be explored.

In addition to the seated bears, incorporating the scenery of the Lake Heart Pavilion, a super-large 7-meter inflatable Happy Bear will be displayed on the surface of Sun Moon Lake during the exhibition period, reflecting the large-scale installation art against the lush green lake. From January 16th to February 18th of next year, the army of 100 teddy bears will march northward and take up residence at the Shilin Official Residence in Taipei, where special events for Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day will also be held.

In light of previous incidents of damage, this year’s teddy bears feature thicker materials and are secured to their bases. The Taiwan Teddy Bear Association also stated that volunteer and staff patrols will be increased this year, with neighborhood watch teams assisting with night patrols as well.
