One of Japan’s Three Great Views — The Scenic Wonders of Matsushima Formed by Over 260 Green Pearls

Matsushima Town in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, is close to the fish-rich Matsushima Bay. Over 260 large and small islands dot the bay, and the variously shaped islets are covered with black and red pine trees, adding great vitality and refined beauty. Whether viewing them from the shore or taking a boat ride through the islands, visitors can sense the marvels of nature. The stunning Matsushima area is also ranked as one of Japan’s Three Great Views alongside Kyoto’s Amanohashidate and Hiroshima’s Itsukushima Shrine, making it a must-visit spot for travelers from around the world.

The best way for visitors to appreciate the beauty of Matsushima up close is by taking a sightseeing cruise between Xi and Matsushima to explore the bay. During the approximately 50-minute ride, visitors can enjoy the sights of multiple islands and learn about their unique features through the onboard Chinese-language guided commentary.

For example, “Horse Release Island” got its name because it was once a place where elderly or sick horses were set free. Another small island resembling the head of a Nio guardian is called Nio Island. There are also other islands of various sizes, such as Armor Island, Ise Island, and Twin Islands, which are scattered like a string of pearls across this beautiful sea. The pine trees on the islands, the rocky outcrops, the ocean waters, and the sky all complement each other, creating a picturesque landscape reminiscent of a celestial ink painting — a truly refreshing sight.

In the past, the term "Matsushima" referred generally to islands with dense pine tree growth over the water. Although similar scenery of islands and pines over water can still be seen in various regions, Matsushima in Miyagi is the most famous and has become the established name. Enjoying the beautiful views of Matsushima Bay paired with fresh local oysters is truly a delight for any trip.
