Spain, the world’s top wine producer, unveils 8 luxury wines with scores over 90

When it comes to wine, many people immediately think of French reds, but it may be hard to imagine that Spain is the world’s largest wine producer—with over 4,000 wineries, 98% of which export their wines internationally. Spain’s wine-making techniques mostly maintain traditional methods, but in recent years, there has also been active modernization of equipment and participation in EU-related research and development programs.

Spain currently has 69 certified wine regions (D.O.P.’s) and as many as 200 indigenous grape varieties. Among them, varieties such as Airén, Tempranillo, Bobal, Garnacha Tinta, and Monastrell all mature in unique ways.

World-renowned Master of Wine Robert Parker once predicted twelve major changes that would impact the global wine market, among which he noted: “Spain is definitely the rising star.” He also positioned Spain as a leader in both wine quality and diversity, combining traditional styles with advanced, modern winemaking techniques. To date, Spanish wines have won 408 awards, including 6 gold medals at this year’s spring Mundus Vini competition. At the 2015 Bacchus International Competition, over 1,500 Spanish wines were awarded, with Spain being the only country to take home gold medals. Meanwhile, Spanish wineries earned 10 gold medals at the 2015 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles and 70 awards at the World Garnachas Competition in Perpignan.
