The weather has turned cold, and it’s time to write about some hearty soup again. Today, let’s talk about beef soup. One day, while riding my bike home from Datong Road, I spotted an unfamiliar sign... Non-Mainstream Warm Beef Cuisine. I was curious and added it to my mental list, but eventually forgot about it—until a kind netizen mentioned it. I guess that’s fate. The sign for Non-Mainstream Warm Beef Cuisine isn’t small, but on Datong Road, where people and vehicles are always in a hurry, even a big sign doesn’t seem to help much.

The dining environment is simple, with air conditioning in summer.

Here’s the menu—it offers a wide variety, not just beef soup.

If you spend over NT$100 for dine-in, you can enjoy unlimited pork-fried rice. I remember when I first started drinking beef soup, most shops allowed customers to eat rice to their heart’s content. This great tradition gradually disappeared, so I’m glad Non-Mainstream has brought it back.

Caramelized Three-Part Beef
The beef is truly three parts rare—if you’re not comfortable with rare meat, it’s best to avoid this dish.

Now, let’s look at the stir-fried cabbage. At first glance, it’s an unremarkable dish, but the first bite was truly surprising. The wok hei (breath of the wok) in this delicious stir-fry really impressed me. This stir-fried cabbage might be the best I’ve had all year—no exaggeration. I think it could easily be a signature dish.

The beef soup is also different from most others. The thicker slices of beef are more satisfying to chew, and the broth, with hints of traditional Chinese medicine and sugarcane, is something my whole family really enjoys. It’s refreshing, smooth, and makes you want to take another sip—a truly great bowl of soup.

Non-Mainstream Warm Beef Cuisine has taken the traditional beef soup shop and extended it with new techniques. I think they’ve done it very successfully, and I’ve decided to add it to S’s dinner rotation right away. Just in case I forget about such a great place, I’m writing about it while it’s still fresh in my mind. I’ll update it anytime I try more delicious dishes in the future.
