Tokyo’s Rainbow Digital Greenhouse Features an Alternative Exhibition – Even the Vegetable Varieties Can Be Heard

Although it’s hard to find green spaces in Tokyo, there’s now a “greenhouse” right in the city center. Tokyo has recently launched a highly futuristic exhibition“Digital Vegetables”, showcasing the city’s diversity and experimental spirit. Visitors can step inside to smell, touch, and learn about vegetables, thereby gaining insight into agriculture.

According to Lonely Planet,this Digital Vegetables display is an experimental project launched by tech company PARTY. The greenhouse is located within the park at Tokyo Midtown as part of the 2017 DESIGN TOUCH event. Once visitors enter this space, they can touch seven types of vegetables grown there. Since the LED lights are connected to the ceiling, touching the plants causes the lights to react, displaying various colors.

Most interestingly, the types of vegetables can also be “heard.” A sound designer has specially arranged orchestral music at the site, with each of the seven vegetables represented by different instruments, accompanied by lighting changes: tomatoes by violin, radishes by trumpet, cabbage by oboe, radish sprouts by flute, sweet potatoes by piano, eggplants by harp, and pumpkins by oboe.

This exhibition aims to show that these vegetables are not just food—they can also be art and design. The exhibit will run until November 5th, so visitors currently in Tokyo shouldn’t miss it.
