The Sweet Taste of Happiness from Japan’s North Country: 3 Dessert Shops from Hokkaido

Japanese restaurants have been opening one after another in Taiwan, but besides eateries, many dessert shops have also expanded to Taiwan, drawn by Taiwanese consumers’ love for Japanese sweets. Popular dessert brands such as LeTAO, 108 Matcha, and White Cosy all hail from Hokkaido.

LeTAO Songyan Branch
The popular Hokkaido dessert shop LeTAO opened its first overseas branch with the same name in Taipei in April 2015, located near the entrance of Taipei’s Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Here you can enjoy their signature double-layer cheesecake. To maintain authenticity, the cheesecake is made in Japan and then flown to Taiwan. Zhang Genghao, manager of LeTAO Taipei, stated that besides the cheesecake, cookies and many ingredients are also air-freighted from Hokkaido, aiming to ensure that the flavors offered at the Taiwan branch match those in Japan.

108 Matcha Tea Lounge
The high-end matcha dessert specialty shop “108 Matcha Tea Lounge” from Asahikawa, Hokkaido, opened an overseas branch at RT Mart Taiyuan in 2014, and established its flagship store at Taipei Main Station’s Taipei Metro Mall in April 2015. Using premium Uji matcha from Kyoto as a base and combining it with various ingredients, they create a range of high-end matcha desserts such as daimyo-yaki (similar to Taiwan’s mochi wheels), premium sundaes, matcha ice cream, warabi mochi, and the matcha soufflé available only at the Taipei Metro Mall branch.

White Cosy Taipei Branch
White Cosy is a dessert café established by the renowned Hokkaido dairy brand “Yotsuba Dairy” (from Tokachi, Hokkaido). In Japan, it has branches including PASEO in Sapporo, New Chitose Airport, and Solamachi at Tokyo Skytree. The Taipei branch is its first overseas location and offers a variety of desserts made with Yotsuba Dairy milk from Hokkaido, such as triple-layer cheesecake tarts, ice cream, plain pancakes, and sundaes. In December, White Cosy also launched a Christmas-limited matcha pancake using Yame matcha from Fukuoka Prefecture, known for its smooth texture and rich, mellow flavor with a fragrant aroma.
