The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum officially launched its trial operation. Last night (27th), the lighting ceremony was held. President Ma Ying-jeou and movie star Jackie Chan attended the opening ceremony today (28th) by riding bicycles to cut the ribbon for the Southern Branch of the Palace Museum. The "Jadeite Cabbage" will also be exhibited at the Southern Branch until October 2, 2016.

President Ma Ying-jeou and Jackie Chan cycled from Chiayi High-Speed Rail Station to the Southern Branch of the Palace Museum starting at 9 a.m. Upon arriving at the Southern Branch campus, Jackie Chan introduced the twelve zodiac animal head sculptures he donated. The opening ceremony invited performances by the Taiwan Voice Children's Choir, the National Chinese Opera Company, and a Peking opera performance by Ms. Wei Haimin. It concluded with a dragon dance to celebrate the official opening of the Southern Branch and the inauguration of the museum.
The Southern Branch of the Palace Museum covers a total area of approximately 70.3 hectares, including an Asian Art Museum, as well as facilities such as an artificial lake and themed gardens. The museum authorities stated that to coincide with the opening of the Southern Branch, the museum’s most popular exhibit, the "Jadeite Cabbage," will also be displayed at the Southern Branch until October 2, 2016. The "Meat-Shaped Stone" will be exhibited starting October 4, allowing residents in southern Taiwan to appreciate these two treasured artifacts without traveling far.
In terms of discounts, entry to the museum is by reservation. From the 29th until the end of March 2016, admission is free for all visitors. To meet local demand, from April 1 to June 30, admission will be free for residents of Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan.
