Japan’s Most Romantic Flower Sea: 4.5 Million Bluebells Bloom at “Hitachi Seaside Park”

Located just a two-hour drive from“Hitachi Seaside Park”, it was once selected by USA Today as one of the most romantic flower seas in the world. Spanning 350 hectares, the park is famous for its vast fields of seasonal blooms, where the beauty of numbers is extravagantly on display. The most renowned attraction is the blue“bluebells”that cover entire hillsides in spring, blending seamlessly with the blue sky on clear days, creating not only a visually expansive scene but also a dreamlike landscape akin to a fairy tale, attracting visitors from all over Japan who flock here just to witness the blue splendor of the bluebells.

Hitachi Seaside Park, also known as Hitachi Kaihin Park, is located in Ibaraki Prefecture, about a two-hour drive from Tokyo, Japan. Facing the Pacific Ocean, visitors can enjoy panoramic sea views from elevated spots. It is Japan’s largest national government park. Covering a total area of 350 hectares—about five times the size of Disneyland—approximately 200 hectares are currently open to the public, divided into a flower garden area, amusement area, and woodland area. A key highlight of the park is the different flower seas visible in each season, and the overwhelming number of blooms creates a sense of happiness that makes visitors want to stay forever.

In spring, 4.5 million blue bluebells, yellow daffodils, and tulips in red, yellow, pink, and purple sway gracefully, painting the land with vibrant colors. In summer, green sweep grass, sunflowers, cosmos, and lavender burst with vitality. In autumn, 32,000 red sweep grasses, roses, and buckwheat flowers create seas of red, white, and yellow, with the round sweep grass being the most eye-catching. From winter to early spring, fewer flowers bloom, but you can still see plum blossoms and rapeseed flowers.

According to accompanying translator Cao Li, the park is extremely expansive, with bicycle rental stations near all four entrances and dedicated cycling paths, fulfilling the dual desires of cycling and exploring the flower seas in Japan. In addition to walking and cycling, visitors can also take sightseeing buses around the park. Every summer, Japan’s largest rock music festival, ROCK IN JAPAN Festival, is held here, attracting hordes of rock fans.

The park’s Miakeru no Oka (Hill of Clear Views) features a large hillside covered with 4.5 million blue bluebells at the end of April, swaying cutely in the wind. From July to September, the slope is transformed into a lush expanse of green “sweep grass,” bursting with energy as if it might roll down the hillside to the feet of visitors—but instead, it clings firmly to the slope. Its cute, round, and fluffy appearance is incredibly healing. By mid-September, the sweep grass gradually turns red, and by October, the entire slope is a sea of red. The red sweep grass adds a touch of vibrancy, welcoming autumn with its bold crimson hues. Around mid-December to mid-January, the previous months’ beauty fades, and the area is covered with white thermal mats.
