When it comes to late-night food hunts, options are usually fewer than during the day. Last time I tried Huangji Eel at Shuixian Temple and wasn’t too impressed, so this time I came to Nanxing on Kangle Street, an eatery with two or three decades of history. Right across the street is Houye Danzai Noodles, another solid late-night option—I’ll have to come back here sometime.

Since it was the night before Mid-Autumn Festival, the barbecue stalls that I’d passed earlier, originally located on both sides of Nanxing, had now expanded dramatically, their sizzling aroma almost “sucking” me away. What a dilemma...

Although I enjoy sweet-and-sour thickened cuttlefish soup, when it comes to eel pasta, I prefer the dry stir-fried version. Here, a dry stir-fried portion costs just NT$100, which is relatively cheap.

When the stir-fried eel pasta arrived, the portion was generous and just hit the spot. The noodles still had a nice bounce to them, and especially that garlicky, slightly charred aroma really whet my appetite. The eel itself had a springy bite and a rich, savory flavor—delicious.

The dry stir-fried pork heart pasta was also pretty good—the pork heart slices were thicker but tender and springy. I also ordered a plate of stir-fried squid, and the ingredients were all very fresh.

It felt really nice to sit out under the arcade, enjoying a warm meal in the cool evening breeze.
