“My friend has left the west where towers Yellow Crane / For River Town when willow-down and flowers reign.”This is one of the well-known works of the great poet Li Bai. Yangzhou, located in southeastern China, is a renowned city with a history of 2,500 years. When talking about one of Yangzhou’s most distinctive attractions, many people immediately think of the classic Chinese-style“Slender West Lake.”Whether watching little ducks swimming freely or taking a boat ride to admire the green willows along the lake, a visit here makes you feel like you’ve “traveled back in time” to the set of an ancient costume drama.

Slender West Lake is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a national scenic area. In spring, it is always blooming with flowers; in summer, lotus flowers are in full bloom; autumn is highlighted by chrysanthemums; and in winter, the fragrance of wintersweet fills the air. Within the scenic area, the emerald waters are complemented by landmarks such as Xu Garden, Little Jinshan Hill, Five-Pavilion Bridge, White Pagoda, Fishing Terrace, Twenty-Four Bridges, and Ten Thousand Flowers Garden. You don’t need a high-end camera or a professional photographer to take stunning pictures here — just a casual shot can result in an incredibly beautiful image.

The Five-Pavilion Bridge is an iconic structure of Slender West Lake. Originally called the “Lotus Bridge,” it is said that it was specially built during the Qing Dynasty by the Salt Transport Commissioner to welcome Emperor Qianlong. Since then, the bridge has been renovated several times. Moreover, the Five-Pavilion Bridge isn’t only beautiful during the day — it also takes on a different charm under the moonlight at night.

Actually, traveling to Yangzhou for an ancient capital experience is very convenient these days. Located in Dinggou Town, Jiangdu District, there is the “Yangzhou Taizhou Airport,” which is about 30 kilometers from the city center. It was jointly invested in by Yangzhou and Taizhou in an 8:2 ratio, and since February 2016, China Airlines has added direct flights from Taoyuan Airport to the area, saving a lot of transit time.
