“Now put on the safety harness and helmet.” “No jumping around while riding the bike.” After a series of stern reminders and equipment checks, the staff finally let us start this biking adventure. Why all the fuss over a simple bike ride? Because we were about to ride bikes 150 feet (about 45.7 meters) above the ground at the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park on Bohol Island in Cebu—a death-defying airborne journey. For those without strong nerves, just looking down might make them too scared to move.

The Chocolate Hills Adventure Park (CHAP) is a large outdoor sports and recreation area on Bohol Island. Surrounded by lush greenery, the park offers more than 20 recreational facilities, including rock climbing, fitness training areas, and aerial zip lines, making it a paradise for adventure seekers. The most popular and scream-inducing attraction is the sky bike ride (The Rush), where you pedal while suspended in mid-air, facing the fear of heights while taking in the stunning views of Bohol’s famous Chocolate Hills.

The Chocolate Hills were formed by geological movements, with rows of small hills scattered across the land like chocolate balls, their round curves often prompting visitors to exclaim, “How cute!” These delicious-looking natural chocolates also change their “flavor” with the seasons. During the rainy season, they’re lush green like matcha, while in the dry season, they turn back to their classic brown chocolate hue. From the observation deck at the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park, you can take in this delightful dessert crafted by Mother Nature.

The sky bike offers an unobstructed view of the Chocolate Hills, hovering about 150 feet (roughly 15 stories) above the ground, with a total round-trip length of 550 meters. It’s connected solely by steel cables—no asphalt or wooden planks—and when you look down, all you see is a vast expanse of untouched tropical forest. Although both the bike and the rider are secured with safety ropes, the experience is still terrifying. But the scattered Chocolate Hills below seem to call out, “Come on, ride!” encouraging every rider to take that brave first step.

Once the bike lifts off the ground, all kinds of thoughts flood your mind: “Is this real?” “It feels like flying!” “There’s really only a cable beneath me!” There’s a strong sense of unreality, and occasional gusts of wind add to the thrill—but that fear quickly gives way to excitement. The elevated perspective offers views you’d never get on the ground, and as the beautiful Chocolate Hills unfold around you, it fills you with courage. Daredevils can even let go of the handlebars and pedals, striking funny poses for the photographer.

Thanks to the harness, the sky bike remains stable, but the fear of being 15 stories above the ground is still a mental hurdle for many. Riders must be at least 6 years old and taller than 120 cm to try it. If you can’t overcome the fear, there are plenty of other attractions in the park—or you can enjoy a fresh, natural forest spa. Either way, it’s a great alternative.
