If you walk through the Houlong Cape Scenic Area in Miaoli and look into the distance, you’ll spot a towering figure — a 32-meter-tall"Great Mazu"stone statue. After 20 years of development, it was finally completed on the 40th anniversary of the Mazu golden statue’s arrival at Qingmei Temple in Taiwan, becoming a symbol of national and public protection.

The Great Mazu stone statue was carved from 266 pieces of granite. The main reason for creating this "Great Mazu" statue was that Qinghai Temple in Nangang Li, Nanwan Li, Houlong Town, enshrines the Heavenly Holy Mother. Twenty years ago, during a pilgrimage and cultural exchange to the Meizhou Ancestral Temple in mainland China, based on the instructions of a spirit medium, it was decided to also build a Mazu stone statue similar to that of the Meizhou Ancestral Temple across the sea in Taiwan, to safeguard the safety of all beings. Thus, the resolve to build it was made. However, over the 20 years, due to issues with protected forest land and insufficient funding, the project could not commence as scheduled. Eventually, these challenges were overcome, and the statue was recently completed, now standing at Qinghai Temple.

The erection of the Mazu statue not only represents the culmination of 20 years of joint effort by devotees, but also embodies the hope that, once built, it will protect the land of Houlong, Miaoli, and safeguard every citizen from harm, ensuring eternal peace and health.
