While cultural and creative hotels aren’t rare in Taichung, and there are many that offer comfortable and refined décor, one hotel in the city takes a unique and playful approach with an artistic flair. It places the bathtub in the bedroom space, making “taking a bath” a central visual element and redefining the concept of the room.

Cheng Yi Cultural Tourism opened in Taichung in 2013. Similar to other properties under the brand, it adopts a high-end, refined style. “Taichung Bird Days” features an exterior inspired by a birdcage, aligning perfectly with the hotel’s name. Liu Jih-Xin, a staff member who spoke to passersby, explained that Taichung is located between northern and southern Taiwan, giving it a light and lively feel reminiscent of birds freely flying. That’s how the name “Bird Days” came about, aiming to inspire more imagination among guests.

The hotel combines a cool color scheme with playful ideas. Upon entering through the dream beast entrance, guests are greeted by a welcome wall made of exposed concrete, using tools as part of the wall art to reflect Taichung’s industrial past. Further inside, there is an ostrich-shaped public art installation covered with various travel information. There are also local art gallery exhibitions, travel-related messages, and even a self-made “Ask the Passerby Newsletter” that combines local exhibition updates.

The central atrium from the old building has been preserved. During reconstruction, the hotel considered sealing it off, but ultimately decided to keep the atrium for its natural lighting. This allows sunlight to pour into every floor, offering a sense of nature's beauty even within this whimsical birdcage-like structure. Walking toward the rooms via the elevator, you’ll find names like Hwamei, Japanese White-eye, and White-rumped Munia.

With a modern urban atmosphere, the “Hwamei” room type features a bathtub placed in the center of the room. At first glance, it may seem a bit bold, but the actual experience is quite unique. Moving a bathtub from an enclosed space to the middle of the bedroom creates an unexpectedly relaxing feeling. To match the central bathtub placement, Taichung Bird Days specially uses easy-to-clean cement flooring, preventing the room from feeling too stuffy or damp.

Yan Changshou once talked about three types of travel: sightseeing, in-depth exploration, and “doing nothing.” Taichung Bird Days focuses on the “in-depth exploration” type and has even created a special “Passerby” role. These staff members help guests with all kinds of travel questions and can provide customized recommendations based on individual styles — all free of charge. Liu Jih-Xin, who works as a passerby, shared that being a native of Taichung gives him deep affection for the city, which he naturally wants to share with guests. This has become a unique feature of the hotel.
