The Taipei Lantern Festival features a 14.2-meter-tall creative "Fortune & Prosperity Monkey"  with a light show every half hour

The 2016 Taipei Lantern Festival will be held from February 20 to 29 at the Taipei Expo Park (Yuanshan). This year’s main lantern, the "Fortune & Prosperity Monkey," made its debut on the 27th. With its unique gourd shape and ever-changing light sculpture technology, it showcases magical visual effects.

The 2016 Taipei Lantern Festival's main lantern model, the "Fortune & Prosperity Monkey," was created by internationally renowned multimedia artist Lin Shumin. It debuts an unprecedented irregular arc-shaped light sculpture. The 14.2-meter-tall main lantern presents ever-changing appearances, resembling a gourd that holds countless treasures, using technology to display magical visual effects.

The city government stated that the main lantern’s appearance is modeled after a "gourd," which in traditional culture symbolizes "fortune and prosperity" and "prosperity with many children." The lantern is named "Fortune & Prosperity Monkey" based on the homophonic sound of "gourd." The peach and goldfish on the monkey carry auspicious meanings, wishing everyone "longevity" and "abundance every year."

Another highlight of this year’s Taipei Lantern Festival is the specially designed themed lantern areas created in collaboration with all 12 administrative districts, showcasing the creativity of the entire city as part of the Taipei Lantern Festival. In the end, citizens will vote via the i-Voting campaign to select the most creative lantern area in their eyes.

Main Lantern Show: Every night from 7 PM to 11 PM, with a 5-minute performance every 30 minutes.
