The Spring Festival holiday has begun, but you haven’t decided where to spend this long break yet? In addition to the various ongoing lantern festivals, from mid-2015 to early 2016, many new attractions have been added across Taiwan. Following our coverage of Northern Taiwan, this article compiles a list of “New Must-Visit Travel Destinations in Central Taiwan for the Lunar New Year”. If you haven’t decided where to go for an outdoor adventure, those in central Taiwan may want to take note.

1. Miaoli – 99-Step 3D Landscape Painting at Jianzhong Elementary School
Jianzhong Elementary School in Sanyi Township, Miaoli County, features a 99-step staircase that visitors must climb to enter the campus. Taking advantage of this unique feature, the Sanyi Township Office transformed the steps into a vibrant 3D landscape painting showcasing local landmarks, including the Formosan clouded leopard, Longteng Broken Bridge, Shengxing Station, a steam locomotive, and even Miaoli’s famous tung blossoms. These artistic creations have turned Jianzhong Elementary School into a new attraction in Sanyi.

2. Nantou – Suspended Walkway Over Longfeng Waterfall
The newly opened Longfeng Waterfall suspended walkway in Zhongliao Township, Nantou, was completed last summer. Located about 5 meters above the waterfall’s source, it is designed inspired by the Grand Canyon Skywalk in the United States. The walkway stretches 30 meters in length and extends approximately 13 meters over the waterfall. Constructed as a transparent U-shaped walkway without suspension cables, standing at the outer edge offers a breathtaking view 50 meters down into the valley. The combination of height and transparency definitely tests visitors’ courage.

3. Nantou – 999 Glowing White Roses at Qingjing Farm
In the Little Swiss Garden at Qingjing Farm, 999 fluorescent roses are arranged as a daytime display of delicate white blooms, which glow with soft white light at night — reminiscent of the LED rose light sea at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, South Korea.

Additionally, the farm decorates the area with pink lanterns and has introduced Taiwan’s first-ever hot air balloon-shaped OPEN light installation. This romantic blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics will continue to enchant visitors until the end of February.

4. Nantou – Momotaro Village
Officially opened at the end of January in Zhushan, Nantou, “Momotaro Village” brings scenes from Japan’s legendary Momotaro story to life. The village features a river, Momotaro’s house (Peach House), a cherry blossom path, Kumamoto Castle, and a Gassho-style village. Stepping inside feels like entering a Japanese street, immersing visitors in the unique charm of traditional tales. The 5.8-hectare park offers endless opportunities for memorable photos.

5. Changhua – Bulb Drinks
Uniquely shaped drinks are all the rage. Originally popularized in Yilan, bulb-shaped bubble milk tea is now available in Changhua — and the bulb-shaped bottles can even be taken home as souvenirs. The shop “HolyDetox Healthy Natural Dining” in Changhua explains that unlike regular pearl milk tea, their fantasy bulb drink is made with black sugar tea instead of the usual black tea and milk tea mix. Customers can also take the quirky bulb bottles home. Since its launch, it has received widespread acclaim and become a popular local beverage.
