Travel Center / Comprehensive Report
Following the January visit of Nicola Portinari, the two-Michelin-starred chef from Italy’s La Peca restaurant, to guest chef at the Bencotto Italian Restaurant within the hotel, Mandarin Oriental Taipei has once again invited the renowned "Father of Contemporary British Cuisine" and chef of London’s The Waterside Inn—Michel Roux, who has held three Michelin stars for 32 consecutive years—to Taiwan. Lunch is priced at NT$7,500 + 10%, and dinner at NT$15,000 + 10%.
Michel Roux and his brother Albert Roux came to the UK from France. The two brothers first opened Le Gavroche in London in 1967, bringing high-end traditional French cuisine to the city and significantly transforming British fine dining culture. In 1972, the brothers opened their second restaurant, The Waterside Inn, in Bray, Berkshire. When the Michelin Guide first reviewed restaurants in the UK in 1974, both Le Gavroche and The Waterside Inn were awarded one star.
The Waterside Inn was elevated to two stars from 1977 to 1984, maintaining that status for eight years. It earned its third Michelin star in 1985, and has retained it every year since until 2016—32 consecutive years. In 2002, Michel Roux handed over management of The Waterside Inn to his son Alain Roux, stepping back into an advisory role.
