Are this year’s lanterns particularly spectacular? In addition to the main lantern “Fortune and Happiness Monkey” at the Taipei Lantern Festival, the uniquely shaped “Prairie Dog” and the eye-catching “30cm Netizen Deer” have sparked widespread discussion and become memorable lantern displays.
At the 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival, which began its trial lighting today in Taoyuan, some visitors also spotted a lantern named “Monkey Guards the Pass.” Created by Ming Chuan University, this lantern not only features exposed frames but is also covered mostly with numerous pink plastic bags. Many people who saw it also strongly questioned, “Is this a trash bag?” “Is it an eco-friendly statement?” It has become an unconventional highlight of this year’s Taiwan Lantern Festival.
