We’ve got to support great local businesses!! Before writing this, Mimi wants to thank Mr. Ramen for their kindness after the Tainan earthquake. The owner, Mr. Nogizaki Takao, even went to the disaster zone personally to cook ramen for rescue workers. This heartwarming and delicious Tainan ramen is definitely worth sharing with everyone. If you love tasty ramen, check to see if there’s an Mr. Ramen near you~

Mr. Ramen was originally a super popular ramen shop in Taipei’s Gongguan area, beloved by students. Its owner, Mr. Nogizaki, deserves a brief introduction. This Japanese man was originally a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly member before coming to Taiwan to pursue a PhD in law at National Taiwan University (where he opened his first ramen shop). After the 311 earthquake, moved by the assistance Taiwanese people provided at the time, he decided to stay in Taiwan and focus on making his ramen shops truly great!!

There are currently four branches across Taiwan, three of which are in Tainan. The one in Anping has been open for quite a while, and I’ve visited several times — it suits my taste well. Plus, the prices are reasonable, noodles are free to add, and you’re guaranteed to eat till you're full~ Recently they launched a promotion: four diners on weekdays get one free portion of fried chicken nuggets. The portion isn’t small — pretty thoughtful!!

As for recommendations, my favorite is the limited-edition “Extreme Mr. Ramen,” but it’s only available around 20 bowls per day — come late and you might miss out. But their Hokkaido miso ramen is also good, which I occasionally order too XD

They occasionally offer special deals. That day, the usual 149 NT hell ramen was just 118 NT. I also had a limited-time jasmine green tea jelly that’s given free to weekday diners!!

The decor is mainly black and red, using simple yet Japanese-style elements, and the staff are very friendly and energetic. At lunchtime on weekdays, it gets really crowded, with a short line outside — business is booming!

Help yourself to drinks.

Besides ramen, you can also choose from Japanese curry rice and donburi, plus some single items like pork cutlets or karaage (Japanese fried chicken), generally priced between 149–199 NT. It’s a pretty affordable and authentic Japanese ramen shop.

Extreme Mr. Ramen (199 NT), limited to 20 portions daily — definitely order it if you see it!! Every time I come, I can’t help but ask if any are left. It’s a highly recommended bowl.

A genuine ajitsuke tamago (marinated egg), not just a halved soy-sauce boiled egg~

Whoa!! This huge slab of pork belly literally melts in your mouth, filling your mouth with the aroma of grilled pork — soft, tender, and super delicious.

We ordered medium hardness, and the texture was just right. The extra noodles are about 1.5 times the regular portion — even guys can get super full on them.

Hokkaido Miso Ramen (149 NT), with a rich miso broth that’s slightly sweet. It seems to be the more crowd-pleasing flavor — if you don’t like spicy, salty, or greasy food, go for this one. And it’s the cheapest, but still made with no shortcuts. Delicious!! My sister loves the broth and always finishes it every time we come XD

Chicken Nugget Donburi (179 NT), it’s a chicken “nugget” donburi, not chicken meat donburi!! What’s the difference? Because the chicken pieces on top are genuinely big chunks — really generous. Comes with miso soup and green tea jelly, and the portion is sufficient. It’s basically karaage — crispy golden crust, juicy inside. Mixed with egg, onion, and scallions over rice, it’s also a good option, though I feel like if you come to Mr. Ramen you should get ramen!! I wonder what kids are thinking these days@@?

Yakiniku Curry Rice (199 NT), the plate of Japanese-style grilled meat is pretty impressive too!! Along with the meat, there's lots of onion and mushrooms, plus half an ajitsuke tamago. Compared to plain meat curry rice, it’s much more balanced nutritionally. The Japanese curry is smooth, thick, and slightly sweet — one of the little ones’ favorite meals. He happily said, “Every time the school cafeteria makes curry, I eat tons of bowls…” Mom: triple facepalm + inner monologue: Then why don’t you like the ones I make? The sister’s feelings are also easily hurt = =

Overall, Mr. Ramen really suits Mimi’s family’s taste, and we visit often. The chefs cook and serve quickly, and even with a short wait it’s never too long. The quality of all the ramen varieties is good, and you can adjust the noodle firmness to your preference, which is a big plus. Plus, with recent news reports about Mr. Nogizaki going to Tainan disaster areas to cook ramen, that sense of human warmth really adds to the positive impression. Must recommend to everyone.
