Boeing unveils new airplane toilet technology: UV sanitization kills 99.99% of bacteria

Whether airplane toilets are clean may not be a top consideration when purchasing a ticket, but this detail remains important to many.According to Lonely Planet, Boeing designers have proposed a new design that will reduce the likelihood of passengers touching surfaces in airplane toilets in the future, as the toilet will automatically clean and disinfect itself after use.

Boeing achieves automatic toilet cleaning primarily through the use of ultraviolet light, which is said to eliminate 99.99% of surface bacteria. In just three seconds, the toilet is returned to a like-new, unused state. The best part? All of this happens without any need for manual operation by passengers—it’s fully automatic.

Designers also hope to develop an automatic lock mechanism aimed at minimizing the chances of passenger contact. These new designs are expected to be implemented on airplanes in the near future, offering a significant benefit for long-haul travelers.
