The Alishan Flower Season has officially begun, and the Alishan Forest Railway is operating special scheduled runs featuring a black steam locomotive pulling four cypress wood carriages. To capture the stunning sight of a steam train weaving through a sea of cherry blossoms, the long-time Alishan observer and fan page “Alishan on Cloud Nine” shares four photography tips. Make sure to visit during the flower season to snap this beautiful scenery.

According to the fan page, first, you need to understand the composition of the Alishan Forest Railway train sets and their order of appearance on the outbound and return journeys. The train formation is “red diesel locomotive + four cypress wood carriages + black steam locomotive.” Next, pay attention to the order of the carriages as the train approaches, since trains cannot reverse direction—on the outbound (upward) journey, the red diesel leads while the black steam engine follows, while on the return (downward) journey, it’s the opposite.

If you want to photograph the steam puffing in the same direction as the moving locomotive, you must shoot from the return (downward) angle. Travelers can treat the outbound trip as a test run, then go all out on the return trip.

The most popular photo spot is the S-shaped Yoshino cherry blossom railway in front of the police station. Here, the tracks seem like the red carpet of a walk of fame, with photographers lining up along the guardrails to capture the steam train paired with cypress wood carriages, puffing white smoke as it passes through the cherry blossom tunnel. Passengers onboard feel like celebrities riding in a parade car, enjoying the continuous clicks of camera shutters.

The Alishan Flower Season steam train service runs from now until April 6, with scheduled runs on March 10, 16, 23, 30, and April 6.
