Flying long-haul international routes to the Americas or Europe often brings the discomfort of sitting for over ten hours. The cramped economy cabin space makes it hard to stretch your legs or lie flat, not to mention dealing with seatmates shifting around or snoring. ETtoday EBC News has compiled some top tips for “flying economy like business class,” offering valuable advice for long-distance travelers.

Tip #1: Choose Your Seat Wisely
For short-haul flights of 2–3 hours, you can pick your favorite seat—window seats near the aisle are usually the most popular among passengers. But for long-haul flights, an aisle seat helps you avoid the awkwardness of asking your neighbor to move when you need to use the restroom. Especially if you plan to drink more water during the flight, an aisle seat is essential for convenience.
In addition to aisle seats, choosing a seat in the first row or the last row by the bulkhead wall is also key.At 154 cm tall, I personally prefer the last row by the bulkhead wall on long-haul flights—the seatback can recline up to 60 degrees after takeoff, and since most infants are seated in the first row, there’s less disturbance. For taller passengers, the first row behind the bulkhead is recommended, as it offers more legroom.

Tip #2: Sleep Essentials – Eye Mask, Earplugs, Slippers, Neck Pillow, Small Blanket, Socks
It’s only after taking several long-haul flights that you realize how important an eye mask and earplugs are. To block out the noise of the engines and nearby conversations, these items can help you fall asleep faster. Many passengers remove their shoes during long flights, but swelling from prolonged sitting can make it hard to put them back on—so soft slippers are a must. Hotel slippers from major chains are a good option.
A neck pillow is one of my most essential tools for long-haul flights. No matter how narrow or crowded the seat, having a place to rest your head can mean several more hours of sleep. As for a small blanket, it’s especially useful for those flying budget airlines on long routes—cabin temperatures can sometimes be low, and blankets on low-cost carriers often come at a fee, so bringing your own is the best choice.

Tip #3: Entertainment Essentials – Tablet, Book, Headphones, Charging Cable
Apart from flying with domestic carriers like China Airlines or EVA Air, passengers on other airlines during long-haul flights often struggle with boredom and trouble sleeping. Before your flight, prepare your tablet and download a few TV series or movies, or bring a book to read onboard. Given that economy class often provides low-quality headphones, it’s wise to bring your own. With a simple adapter, you can watch in-flight movies, listen to music, or use them with your tablet.

Tip #4: Personal Care and Hygiene Items – Toothbrush & Toothpaste, Makeup Removal Wipes, Hand & Face Wipes, Lip Balm, Lotion, Face Masks
Personal care items are often overlooked but are actually quite necessary—this is why many long-haul flight bathrooms provide lotion, sprays, and other essentials. Business class passengers usually have their own travel kits with lotion and lip balm, but economy travelers may need to bring their own. Whether it’s brushing your teeth after a meal or washing your face and removing makeup before bed, these habits can help you sleep more comfortably.
The air on planes is dry, so lip balm and lotion are very important. For a more comfortable journey, consider using a face mask. Just remember: any toiletries you bring must be in containers under 100 ml and stored in a zip-lock bag to be allowed onboard.

After multiple long-haul flights and careful planning—choosing the right seat, packing the right items—I’ve mastered the art of flying economy in comfort. With early seat selection and thoughtful preparation, you won’t have to worry about boredom and can even enjoy the “business-class-like” experience of fully reclining and stretching your legs.
