No. 10 Yilan Daxi
The “Honeymoon Bay” near Yilan Railway Station sees fewer crowds compared to Wushih Harbor. Especially in winter, it often has “great waves.” Honeymoon Bay’s coastal area features strong and complex rock formations, which frequently draw surfing pros. It’s less suitable for beginners.

No. 9 Taichung Da’an
Taichung also has a great surfing destination. Located in Taichung, Da’an offers a sandy and safe seabed without dangerous coral reefs or sharp rocks. The space is much larger too. In summer, wave heights average around one meter, and in winter, they can even rise above a surfer’s head. Longboard lovers must give this spot a try.

No. 8 New Taipei Shimen
Shimen is a favorite summer spot for students. Wave height averages about one meter in the summer, but due to the terrain, waves are often absent. More importantly, because Shimen is located in a depression with unstable currents, the tidal range exceeds two meters, often leading to drowning incidents. As a result, Shimen is listed among Taiwan’s top ten most dangerous waters.

No. 7 New Taipei Fulong
Fulong Beach is practically a must-visit for everyone in northern Taiwan. It was even listed by American surfing magazine Surfing Magazine as one of the world’s top 50 best surfing spots. If you’re looking to surf here, make sure to go to Dongxing Temple Square nearby—not the beach itself. Fulong offers right-breaking waves of about 2–3 meters, with shallow waters and soft sand, making it ideal for beginners.

No. 6 New Taipei Jinshan
Jinshag Sand Ju Bay doesn’t have the long stretches of beach and sea like other bathing spots, and the waves are rather inconsistent. So if you plan to surf here, make sure to check the wave conditions for the day first.

No. 5 Kenting Nanwan
Kenting Nanwan, the southernmost beach in Taiwan, is a must-visit for locals. Aside from surfing, there are plenty of water activities. Wave conditions are consistently good year-round, usually around 2–3 meters, and it has hosted multiple international surfing competitions.

No. 4 Yilan Waiao
Located north of Yilan’s Wushih Harbor, Waiao is another hotspot for surfers. The highly recommended “Twin Lions Beach” supposedly has waves all year round, but its terrain is unique, featuring both reef and sandy zones. Waves here are typically fast, curling, and powerful—ideal for shortboard riders, though not recommended for beginners.

No. 3 Taitung Donghe
Donghe is a beach frequented by many foreign surfers and is Taiwan’s only surf spot recognized by the ASP International Professional Surfing organization as a venue for international competitions. Every year, the Taiwan International Surfing Open is held at nearby Jintun Fishing Port. With its naturally advantaged geography—about fifty meters of flat continental shelf—Donghe offers smooth and steady waves that surfers simply can’t complain about.

No. 2 Kenting Jialeshuei
Jialeshuei’s estuary terrain offers surfable waves all year, with smooth, thick, and long swells that let you ride for dozens of seconds. Jialeshuei has been chosen multiple times as a venue for international surfing circuit competitions.

No. 1 Yilan Toucheng
Yilan Toucheng is the most talked-about surfing spot in Taiwan online—it’s the famous Wushih Harbor. Its geography creates great wave shapes, especially after the Hsuehshan Tunnel opened, drawing large crowds. But more people can lead to wave disputes, so during the summer, all surfers should follow surfing etiquette to enjoy the waves safely.
