Low-cost carriers continue to enter Taiwan, not only competing for a share of the Japanese market but also turning their sights on Southeast Asia. Malaysian low-cost airline “Malindo Air” will also come to Taiwan, launching flights between Taipei (Taoyuan) and Kota Kinabalu, becoming the third low-cost carrier to operate the Kota Kinabalu route after AirAsia and Tigerair Taiwan, with services expected to begin in June.

According to a report on Taiwan’s low-cost airline situation released by the Civil Aeronautics Administration on the 14th, there are currently 20 low-cost airlines in Taiwan operating a total of 30 routes. In 2015 alone, 4.73 million travelers flew abroad with low-cost carriers. As low-cost carriers become increasingly common in Taiwan, they have also driven price competition on popular routes. For example, traditional airlines reduced ticket prices by 17% on routes such as Tokyo Narita and Singapore in 2015. The Civil Aeronautics Administration stated that the entry of low-cost carriers can stimulate the travel market and lead to lower fares, which has positive benefits.
