New Airplane Design: Economy Class Seats Transform into Beds in 30 Seconds

Flying while lying down—could this be every traveler’s dream?According to the UK’s Daily Mail, Italian seat manufacturer Geven has designed a “bed” that flattens airplane seats to address long-standing passenger demands and alleviate the stress of long-haul flights.

The new concept airplane seat, called Piuma Sofa, can transform three to four airplane seats into a bed in just 30 seconds. This innovative design made its debut at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, attracting the attention of many airlines, with both South African Airways and AirAsia X showing interest in purchasing.

Geven states that the seats themselves are very lightweight, and when transformed into beds, they do not compromise legroom or under-seat space.

This type of seat design will be available in specific sections of economy class. Of course, passengers who wish to enjoy a more comfortable flight will need to pay a bit extra—approximately around NT$10,000.
