The 2018 Michelin Guide for Hong Kong and Macau Released — 5 Restaurants Stripped of Stars

The 2018 Michelin Guide for Hong Kong and Macau was released today (Nov. 30). This edition includes a total of 227 restaurants in Hong Kong and 65 in Macau. All three-Michelin-starred restaurants retained their status — there were no losses, with a total of 8 such restaurants. There are 16 two-star restaurants and 47 one-star restaurants. However, 3 restaurants dropped from two stars to one star, and 5 one-star restaurants lost their stars entirely, including Taiwan-favorite Tim Ho Wan’s North Point branch.

In the latest edition of the Michelin Guide for Hong Kong and Macau, no new restaurants entered the three-star or two-star categories, but some did lose stars. Originally two-star restaurants Duddell's, Ming Court, and Summer Palace were downgraded to one star. Meanwhile, originally one-star restaurants Tim Ho Wan (North Point), CIAK - in the kitchen, Royal Park Hotel’s Golden Leaf, SEASONS, and WAGYU Kaiseki Den were stripped of their stars. With the loss of Tim Ho Wan North Point’s star, the only Tim Ho Wan location that still holds a Michelin star is the one in Sham Shui Po.

Although no new restaurants entered the three-star or two-star categories, eight new one-star restaurants were added: Arcane, Imperial Treasure Fine Chinese Cuisine, Kaiseki Den by SANTOME, Rech, Tate, The Ocean, The Excelsior Hong Kong’s Eminent and Ying Zhi Club. Among them, Eminent at The Excelsior Hong Kong, located within the hotel, specializes in authentic Cantonese cuisine. Its current Executive Chinese Chef, Wong Wing Keung, has over 30 years of culinary experience and joined the hotel in 2013.

Additionally, at the end of October, the Michelin-selected "Bib Gourmand" recommended restaurants were announced, with a total of 82 selected — 73 in Hong Kong and 9 in Macau. Seventeen of these are first-time entries. Among the newly listed is a restaurant opened in Hong Kong by two Taiwanese people called “Please Sit,” which serves traditional Taiwanese flavors and promotes authentic Taiwanese street food.
