Spring is a riot of colors, and late spring to early summer is the perfect time for flower viewing. Various trees and plants sway in the spring breeze, displaying a vibrant spectrum of colors. Among them, rows of tall jacaranda trees are covered in clusters of blue-purple flowers, which bask in the sunlight, showing off their delicate beauty. They contrast beautifully with the clear blue sky, creating a truly eye-catching sight.

Jacaranda trees are tall and resemble flame trees, growing up to over 15 meters in height. Their old trunks have distinct cracks. The leaves are pinnately compound, with oblong leaflets that are pointed at the tip, green on the front, and light green on the back. They bloom in spring, with flowers growing on branches. The flowers are tubular, flat, and small, with swollen bell-shaped bases at the bottom, colored blue-purple. When in full bloom, the entire plant is densely covered with flower spikes, presenting strings of rich purple-blue blooms that are highly ornamental.

The flowering period of jacaranda lasts about one month. As the flowers bloom, they also fall, covering the ground in a layer of romantic purple. The fruit is round and flat, with seed pods containing many small, flat seeds with thin wings. The fruiting season is approximately from September to December.

The origin of the jacaranda is Brazil, the West Indies, Peru, and Bolivia. It is also known as the Brazilian jacaranda or African jacaranda. It thrives in warm, humid environments with ample sunlight and does not tolerate frost or snow.

Jacarandas grow better in southern regions. During the flowering season, it’s common to see branches fully covered with blue-purple blooms. However, in Taipei, the blooms are not as abundant because the spring in the north is cooler, with an average temperature of around 17°C. Although the trees do bloom, they don’t flourish as well as they do in southern Taiwan.
Tall jacaranda trees can grow up to 15 meters.
