The well-known congee and side dishes eatery “Wumingzi” on Fuhsing South Road was a go-to late-night spot for many Taipei residents, but recently it’s been reported that Wumingzi has shuttered — its iron gate tightly shut and a rental sign hanging high. It has officially ceased operations.

On the stretch of Fuhsing South Road, Section 2, heading toward Heping East Road, the area was once dubbed the “Congee and Side Dishes Street” or even the “Late-Night Snack Street.” However, in recent years only a few spots have remained, namely Xiao Lizhi, Wumingzi, and Yiliu Congee & Side Dishes. Among them, Wumingzi Congee & Side Dishes recently shocked patrons by announcing it had stopped operations as of January 1, 2019.

Steaming hot sweet potato congee, classic Taiwanese stir-fried dishes, and savory pickles to accompany your meal — this 24-hour congee spot was a favorite haven for night owls. Now, yet another long-standing congee and side dishes shop on what was once the “Congee and Side Dishes Street” has gone dark, marking a truly saddening loss.
