How to protect your valuables while traveling is crucial, as many countries don’t have the same level of security as Taiwan. Here are six anti-theft tips that will make pickpockets regret their life choices.
Many famous tourist attractions abroad are often hotspots for pickpockets.
1.Separate Your Valuables in Different Places
Following the principle of not putting all your eggs in one basket, keep your cash and cards in separate places. This way, even if you do encounter a pickpocket, your losses will be minimized, and you won’t find yourself stranded or unable to continue your trip just because you have no money on you.
When asking for directions, remember to keep an eye on your valuables.
2.Never Let Your Valuables Out of Your Sight
Abroad, the back of your backpack is public property, the side is for others, and only the front is truly yours. So no matter where you are, never let your valuables out of your sight. Don’t leave your phone on the table, take your belongings with you when you go to the restroom—these are basics. Abroad isn’t like Taiwan, so you’ll need to be more diligent and vigilant.
Also stay alert to the people around you while taking photos.
3.Sit Away from the Door and Hold Your Bag Close
When traveling, it’s inevitable that you’ll use public transportation. When doing so, try to avoid sitting near the doors and remember to hug your backpack close to your chest. This prevents thieves from making a quick getaway and, since subways are crowded, pickpockets might try to slash your bag. Keeping your bag in front of you leaves no room for them to operate.
Crowded places are a breeding ground for pickpocket crimes.
4.Adjust Your Walking Pace When Moving
In crowded areas, you can use your walking speed to reduce the chances of pickpockets succeeding. By varying your pace—sometimes walking faster, sometimes slower—or maintaining a slightly brisk walk, it becomes much harder for thieves to steal from you, and they may even give up on targeting you altogether.
When traveling abroad, especially in Southern Europe, you’re more likely to encounter theft or robbery.
