Historic sites with an old-world charm often reflect a city’s history and cultural essence. On September 18 and 19 this year, it’s National Heritage Day—a rare opportunity to explore these landmarks. This year’s Heritage Day features specially opened sites including: usually heavily guarded locations such as the Control Yuan, Executive Yuan, and Taipei Guest House, as well as venues not normally open to the public like the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, the Governor-General’s Office Mountain Forestry Division Dormitory, Dadaocheng Church, Zhongshan Presbyterian Church, and Jinan Church.
Additionally, some venues that usually charge admission will also be open to visitors. These include the Li Kwoh-ting Memorial House, Taipei Water Department Park, National Museum of Taiwan, the Former Bank of Taiwan Building, and the Beitou Cultural Artifacts Museum, all of which will offer free or discounted entry on Heritage Day. Some heritage sites are also preparing souvenirs for visitors on that day.
So far, Taipei has designated over 300 heritage sites, including historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and ruins. However, there are countless more tangible and intangible cultural assets around us. This year, the Taipei Heritage Day series of events will start with the concept of preservation. Through cultural heritage courses, guided tours on Heritage Day, and the “Heritage Guardians” certification program featuring Taipei’s “patrol cats,” the idea of protecting the city can be more easily learned via the convenience of the internet.
