Taiwan’s north is home to the famous Yehliu Geopark, but the ever-changing East Coast National Scenic Area also boasts a “Little Yehliu” located just north of Fugang Fishing Port. Geological forces have shaped monocline ridges, honeycomb rocks, turtle-back rocks, tofu rocks, and mushroom rocks here. Its extraordinary scenery resembles that of Yehliu on the northern coast, which is how it got the name “Little Yehliu.” But don’t underestimate Little Yehliu—its rich and magnificent natural masterpieces rival those of Taipei’s Yehliu.
Little Yehliu is situated at the southernmost end of the East Coast National Scenic Area. It houses a visitor center and a Natural Geology Exhibition Hall that introduces the area’s geological landscapes and the evolutionary history of the coastal mountain range. Visitors who walk through this “natural classroom” will come to appreciate the magical power of nature in crafting such massive and colorful geological formations.
Shaped by the interaction of thick sandstone layers and thin shale layers, Little Yehliu’s rocks bear clear geometric lines due to prolonged erosion by seawater. The varying hardness of the rocks has created an array of fascinating shapes. The seaside trail connecting the visitor center to Little Yehliu is lined with coastal plants such as beach hibiscus, screw pines, beach morning glories, and date palms, all of which inspire awe at nature’s wonders.
The rugged and winding coastal terrain also attracts many anglers.
Just about 6 kilometers from downtown Taitung, Little Yehliu is perfect for planning a half-day trip along Taitung’s east coast. On clear days, you can even see Green Island, located 32 kilometers away. Camping enthusiasts can set up at the nearby seaside campsite to enjoy the romance and tranquility of the coast.
