The Taipei City Government has launched the “2012 Dragon’s Here” mobile app game, which not only displays a New Year’s Eve countdown on your phone every day but also lets you raise your own virtual pet — a “dragon egg.” Feed it daily, and as the clock strikes midnight into the year 101, that BMW car might just be yours!

Taipei City Government Department of Information and Tourism Director Zhao Xinpeng stated that Taipei offers free public Wi-Fi across urban areas. This year marks the first time an app for the New Year’s Eve celebration, “2012 Dragon’s Here,” has been designed, tying in with both the upcoming 2012 and the Year of the Dragon. As users feed their dragon eggs, they will occasionally receive e-coupons — including drinks, food, and daily necessities — with over 10,000 total rewards and discounts available. On New Year’s Eve, bring your phone to the countdown event and you might even win the unprecedented grand prize in Taiwan’s New Year’s celebration history — a brand-new BMW. As you ring in the new year and gaze up at the 101 fireworks, look down at your phone: a lucky dragon will hatch from its egg and bring another surprise!
Starting now, the public can download the “2012 Dragon’s Here” app for free from the Android Market and iTunes Store. Feed your dragon egg daily with information on Taipei’s attractions, food, and city news to earn up to 3 points per day. On New Year’s Eve, bring your phone to the countdown event and “check in” at the venue to gain a whopping 101 points. For every 50 points earned during gameplay, you’ll get one chance to enter the BMW grand prize draw — and it goes up from there. The more points you have, the better your chances of winning.

Additionally, the “2012 Taipei’s Most Exciting New Year’s City” Facebook fan page is hosting the “I’m the New Year’s Superstar” campaign, where the public can create personalized New Year’s posters using photos of their favorite performing artists. Participants in the “I’m the New Year’s Superstar” activity will have a chance to win VIP tickets (1 winner, 2 tickets), allowing them to enjoy the best views of the spectacular New Year’s countdown show and the 101 building fireworks display.
