It’s early spring now—why not take a fitness and wellness mini-trip during the holiday? Taipei City has recently completed four new ecological trails, including the “Hushan Ecological Trail” in Xinyi District, which offers a bird’s-eye view of Taipei 101, the ever-changing Shishan Trail in Shilin District, the Fengwei Trail in Beitou District where cherry blossoms are in full bloom from February to March, and the Shuiche Liao Trail in Beitou where calla lilies line the path in March. These trails are well-planned and each has its own unique features. Additionally, the city has launched the free-to-download “Taipei Hiking Buddy” APP, which integrates GPS and maps of the hiking trails to provide the public with more up-to-date hiking information.

These four ecological trails incorporate local natural and cultural landscapes, creating diverse characteristics for each trail. For example, the Hushan Ecological Trail in Xinyi District has newly added three observation decks, allowing visitors to overlook the entire Xinyi District and gaze at Taipei 101. The trail also connects two temples—the Songshan Cihui Temple and the Zhen’guang Zen Temple—so that besides enjoying the refreshing greenery, hikers can also visit the temples to pray for good fortune in the new year.

The freely downloadable “Taipei Hiking Buddy” APP integrates GPS with hiking trail maps, allowing users to check in or upload photos. It also incorporates a disaster prevention and relief system, so if you encounter an emergency, you can use your phone to send messages to other hikers on the same trail and get immediate help. The Android and Microsoft versions are already available, while the iPhone version will be open for download starting March 1.
