The Taiwan Top 10 Tourism Towns selection, organized by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, ran from January 21 to March 9 at noon in 101 (2012). After more than a month of voting, based on data as of the March 9 noon deadline, among the 17 shortlisted towns across Taiwan, Sanyi stood out with its distinctive wood carving art theme, Taiwan’s only wood carving industry cluster, convenient transportation network, internationally renowned tourist attractions, diverse and engaging travel experiences, warm hospitality, and high level of local engagement in tourism, securing strong public support and taking the top spot in the voting activity.

According to the official website data from the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications at the deadline, Miaoli County’s “Sanyi Wood Carving Art Town” received 461,311 votes (214,536 online votes and 246,775 postcard votes), firmly taking the first place. It led the second-place Taoyuan County’s “Daxi Presidential Town” by 52,331 votes. The other towns in order were: Taichung City’s “Dajia District Mazu Culture,” Tainan City’s “Anping—Taiwan’s Name Originates from Anping,” Kaohsiung City’s “Meinong District—Meinong’s Beauty and Warmth,” Nantou County’s “Jiji Town—Train Impressions & Breezy Jiji,” Kinmen County’s “Kincheng’s Houpu Quaint Town,” New Taipei City’s “Ruifang District Shuijinjiu Region’s Mining Secrets,” Changhua County’s “Lukang Town—Crafts, Cuisine, and Historic Sites,” Yilan County’s “Jiaoxi Hot Springs Wellness & Lifestyle Town,” Pingtung County’s “Liuqiu Township—Intertidal Zone,” Taipei City’s “Xinyi Fashion City,” Taipei City’s “Beitou Charming Town,” Lienchiang County’s “Matsu Beigan Township,” Taitung County’s “Hot Air Balloon Homeland—Luye,” Penghu County’s “Magong Folk Culture Town,” and Hualien County’s “Ruisui Township—Tea, Milk, and Hot Spring Aromas.”
The second phase of voting for the Taiwan Top 10 Tourism Towns accounts for 20% of the total score, while written reviews, expert site visits, and presentations by participating towns make up the remaining 80%. The final list of the Top 10 Tourism Towns will be announced after the participating towns complete their presentations on March 14.
